Google "Docs and Spreadsheets"

October 11, 2006 · 5 Comments

Google just launched Docs & Spreadsheets at docs.google.com. It integrates the previously separate Writely and Spreadsheet product silos into a single control panel and admin area (the previous sites for those products redirect to docs.google). This is not a deep product integration, but it is another shot across the bow of Microsoft Office. I had an unexpected opportunity to meet the team and take a look at the product earlier today along with a few other bloggers.

This is technically a huge achievement to get a browser to act as a baby word processor and a baby spreadsheet, I’m in awe of the amount of work and swearing that must have gone into making something that was never designed to be a word processor, even such a basic one as this.

But, in fear of being a wet blanket, what’s it for? Even more so is this scaleable? I don’t think so.

Word pad does a better job and is quicker than the ‘word processor’ and I can use my webdings fonts on wordpad and print to my printer in seconds in A3 or whatever. I don’t use spreadsheets much but I imagine there a 6 billion free ones out there that do a better job. The only occasional thing I use a spreadsheet for is graphs, and it doesn’t seem to do this, I imagine it will soon, but this will be even slower, a roundtrip to the server will be necessary to create the .gif or .jpg or whatever.

Also, who’d want to rely on using javascript to do any important calculations? It’s only single precision, i.e. it will lose dollars and cents.

I agree that it’s amazing technology, as a proof of concept that you can even do this stuff, my techie hat is doffed. But the idea, that this is somehow better or can even compete with Office, well I want some of whatever there smoking, it’s good stuff.

I’d like someone to say no I’m wrong, and here’s why, because I must be missing something.
