Microsoft Office 2007 uses brand-new XML file formats that adhere to completely open standards. Or at least they will. Or at least we’re 99 percent sure they will. Ecma International, the worldwide standards organization, has yet to approve Microsoft’s standards, but odds are that everything will be in place by the time Office ships.

Google just launched Docs & Spreadsheets at docs.google.com. It integrates the previously separate Writely and Spreadsheet product silos into a single control panel and admin area (the previous sites for those products redirect to docs.google). This is not a deep product integration, but it is another shot across the bow of Microsoft Office. I had an unexpected opportunity to meet the team and take a look at the product earlier today along with a few other bloggers.

There are a number of reasons. However, the main one is that, unlike Windows Vista, Office 2007 is not a must have. People do not need to part with $500 or so to upgrade to a new version of Office. In fact, they will be reluctant to do so and, unlike the case with Vista, there are now viable alternatives.
