The Unicode Standard is a character coding system designed to support the worldwide interchange, processing, and display of the written texts of the diverse languages and technical disciplines of the modern world. Microsoft and Teradata Team Up

As part of this effort, Microsoft and Teradata are collaborating to enhance interoperability between the Teradata Enterprise Data Warehouse and Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services, targeting availability of the technologies for the end of the first quarter of 2007. In addition, interoperability collaboration efforts with Teradata will include SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services; SQL Server 2005 Integration Services; and the 2007 Microsoft Office system including Microsoft Office Excel 2007, Windows SharePoint Services and Microsoft Office PerformancePoint Server 2007. The worldwide relationship includes plans for joint sales and marketing activities across multiple industries, beginning with the retail sector.

HP Forms Business Intelligence Unit

Hewlett-Packard on Wednesday launched a software unit focusing on information management and business intelligence, with the latter centered on the company’s Neoview data-warehousing system that started shipping to select customers in October.
Each of the two groups within the new Business Information Optimization unit will have its own leader. Ben C. Barnes, former chief executive for identity management company ActivIdentity and content management company Intraspect Software, was named VP and general manager of the BI group. HP planned to name the head of the information management group in the coming weeks.
Product specifics and road maps weren’t disclosed for either group, but Barnes said HP’s BI strategy revolved around infrastructure technology that would be built on Neoview and announced no later than the spring.

Metadata in Electronic Documents OK to Use in Court, ABA Rules

Attorneys receiving electronic documents are free to use so-called “metadata” and other information embedded in those documents, the American Bar Association has ruled. The ABA said metadata includes such information as the last date and time that a document was saved and by whom, data on when it was accessed, the name of the owner of the computer that created the document and the date and time it was created, as well as a record of changes made to the document or related written comments.

Software executive gets 12 years

The former boss of Computer Associates has been sentenced to 12 years and fined $8m (£4.2m) for his role in a giant fraud at the US software giant.
According to one prosecution charge, Mr Kumar was so involved with boosting sales figures for one particular quarter as it was closing that he flew in a corporate jet to Paris to finalise a $19m deal and signed a contract that had been backdated.
